TT-Sense®: runner-up for the Maritime Innovation Award 2015
November 2, 2015The winners of five prestigious maritime awards were announced at the Maritime Awards Gala this Monday evening November 2nd. One of the nominees is TT-Sense®. A unique sensor to measure Thrust and Torque, developed by VAF Instruments B.V. This advanced measurement system for propulsion efficiency is runner up for the Maritime Innovation Award 2015.
Maritime Awards Gala 2015
This year Netherlands Maritime Technology celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Maritime Awards Gala on Monday evening, November 2nd. Since the first edition in 2001, the gala has grown into the leading maritime event of the year where the captains of the industry come together for the presentation of five maritime awards. One of which is the Maritime Innovation Award with three nominees including the Hybrid Boom Crane by Huisman, the Hull Vane by Hull Vane and the TT-Sense® by VAF Instruments.
The innovation
The TT-Sense®, Thrust and Torque sensor, is a extreme precise measurement system for propulsion efficiency. It monitors the efficiency of the propeller and fouling of the vessels hull. The optical sensors use nanotechnology to measure shaft power and actual thrust generated by the propeller, resulting in a total efficiency overview of the propulsion system. Since efficiency can be individually monitored for hull, propeller and engine, the TT-Sense® is an excellent instrument for improving operations as well as planning maintenance when looking e.g. at fouling.
Propulsion efficiency reduces the environmental footprint of shipping. However, maximizing the operational efficiency of vessels’ propulsion system is not just a green solution. Fuel costs are still a major part in the operating costs of a ship and new regulations force ship owners to use more expensive fuels in some areas. The application of a propulsion efficiency monitoring system can reduce fuel consumption, which will save costs up to 10% and in some cases, even more.
