Vessel Performance info Forum 2023
February 21, 2023VAF Instruments' Erik van Ballegooijen will present about the Journey of Operational Ship Propulsion Performance Improvements during the Vessel Performance Info Athens forum on February 23rd, 2023.
The landscape of requirements to fulfil by a vessel with respect to the environment and emissions, is increasing rapidly. Latest additions are the IMO EEXI, CII, EU ETS, new company ESG regulations and green ship finance. All this puts pressure on operating a vessel as green as possible. But how to get there? How to improve the sailing of a vessel, which sensors to add and data to collect, what will it bring, and what is the operational impact?
In order to find an answer to these complex set of questions, accurate data is needed to base decisions on. And here the journey starts for proper monitoring and measuring of the vessels propulsion performance.
In the presentation the various levels of this journey are discussed. How to translate data into actions. Which hardware (sensors, data collection systems), and software solutions (monitoring dashboards) are advised, and which maturity level and experience of the vessel performance department is requested. All above supported by actual vessel data and experiences of VAF customers.
About the event
Today we have lots of decarbonisation products, tools and reporting schemes. But our ability to make better decisions to drive decarbonisation is still very limited, whether you are a charterer, shipping investor or owner, technical manager, superintendent or seafarer.
At the Vessel Performance Info Athens forum on February 23, you'll see at how charterers and shipping companies can get a better understanding of what actually drives decarbonisation - and also how technology providers can help provide this awareness.
It is still hard for charterers to understand which of the vessels available to them offer the least emissions for the best price; it is hard for shipowners to know what new ships to invest in; it is hard for technical managers to know what technologies to invest in, and it is hard for superintendents and crew to know what to do. Shipping company chartering departments need to understand whether accepting a certain cargo and required voyage sped will push a vessel into the 'D' band of CII in its annual report. Technical departments need to understand what savings they might get from the range of options available to them.
There are so many decarbonisation choices, including fuels, technology changes, routing and speed, and the confusion over choices will only increase as more options are available.
This is about more than reporting - reporting does not directly help decision making. As a domestic example, you may have a report of the energy efficiency of your dishwasher, but this does not help you work out if you use less energy to wash the dishes by hand. We may be thinking more about this as energy prices rise - and it is an analogy for plenty of industrial questions such about washing tanks or using autopilots.
